The Irish are famous for being great storytellers. And the owners of Donegal Imports, Alex and Sheila McGrath, are not only great at telling stories, but they’re great at writing them too.
Their story began in Chicago, where Alex and Sheila met at a dance. No matter that Alex hailed from County Kilkenny and Sheila from Donegal—they hit it off. So much so that they married and had three children.
On November 1, 1979—they opened Donegal Imports at its present location on Devon Avenue in the Edgebrook neighborhood. After years of managing large grocery store chains, Alex decided the time was right to start their own business. He used that experience to import one-of-a-kind products from Ireland, most notably Waterford Crystal, Belleek Parian China, Donegal tweed designs and Celtic jewelry.
Over the years, the business has evolved and grown, but one thing has never changed: Alex and Sheila’s commitment to the community. They have always supported Irish and Irish-American groups and causes as well as local schools and churches in the Edgebrook neighborhood.
It is that commitment—along with excellent service—that has kept customers coming back to Donegal Imports for over 30 years. Alex’s irrepressible charm may also have something to do with it. On any given day, you can walk into the store and hear his infectious laughter after he delivers the punch line to one of his favorite jokes.
